The short version

Your camera feed is processed in your browser and never streamed to us. We only receive a recording when you press submit. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.

What we store

  • Submitted recordings — the video clip, the extracted hand and body landmark data, a poster frame, and the sign label you entered.
  • Consent record — which version of the consent notice you agreed to, and when.
  • Account details, if you create one — handle, display name, email and a hashed password. Passwords are stored as PBKDF2 hashes and are never recoverable.
  • A random contributor id in your browser's local storage if you contribute without an account, so your clips can be grouped.

What we do not store

  • Any video from before you pressed submit, including everything shown in the camera preview.
  • Your IP address alongside your recordings. IPs are used transiently for rate limiting only.
  • Advertising or cross-site tracking identifiers of any kind.

How recordings are used

Approved clips train sign recognition models, appear as examples in the public dictionary, and are included in the open dataset released for research. Your face is visible in these clips — that is inherent to sign language, which uses facial expression grammatically. Only submit recordings you are comfortable being public.

Removing your data

Email support@softbrane.com with your handle or contributor id and we will delete your recordings from storage and from future dataset releases. Copies already downloaded by third parties from a previous release cannot be recalled, which is why we ask you to be deliberate at the point of submission.
